As Founder and Artistic Director of the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival, Linda Chesis is always on the lookout for artists to book for the festival. She talks with Eugenia Zukerman and Emily Ondracek-Peterson of Noted Endeavors about what she looks for when deciding which musicians to book, while also suggesting what musicians can do to make themselves more appealing for booking.
The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival in the historic Village of Cooperstown is located in a small town in the heart of central New York with global appeal. Originally famous through its association with The Leatherstocking Tales by author James Fenimore Cooper (son of Cooperstown’s founder William Cooper) it is now the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and one of the finest Music Festivals in the country. Started by flutist Linda Chesis in 1999, Cooperstown Summer Music Festival concerts have been featured on Performance Today, America’s most popular classical music radio program, with more than 1.3 million weekly listeners. Linda Chesis is the tireless head of the festival, its Music Director, its host, its champion, and its driving force.
Noted Endeavors founders Eugenia Zukerman and Emily Ondracek-Peterson ask Linda Chesis of the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival how she did it.
Flutist and festival artistic director Linda Chesis saw Cooperstown, NY as an ideal location for a music festival. With its picturesque lake setting, small town charm, restaurants and attractions, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The Farmers’ Museum, and the Fenimore Art Museum it seemed an ideal spot. Beginning with three events in 1999, Linda has since then offered the region more than 100 performances, from classical to contemporary, jazz to bluegrass, cabaret to kids’ concerts. The Festival has featured: Midori, Hank Jones, the American String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Tim Fain, Bill Charlap, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, and Mark O’Connor. How did Linda Chesis do it? With a lot of work and a lot of love.
